The first time I saw these ladies perform I was impressed with the troupe costuming. Each persons costume was an expression of their own style and color pallet, yet the costumes went together so well it made their troupe look professional. Upon seeing the later performances of the 'Bad Habibis' I was delighted to find that almost all of their costumes were made by the dancers themselves. Now I am pleased to be able to sponsor them in a workshop series to share what their teacher taught them, as well as sharing their experience of making their own costumes for over 6 years.

"I started bellydancing 7 years ago, and soon thereafter started making my own costumes, with the creative guidance and instruction of Sofia Nur. I had never sewn a stitch when I started my first costume, and thought I would never do it again. Yet I found that I could be inspired to create a new costume by a scrap of fabric, a photograph, a piece of music. I have designed several costumes that I wear professionally. These costumes are really an extension of this art of bellydance. By creating your own costumes, you have costumes that fit to flatter, and that accentuate your individual dance style. I hope that with a little instruction, you, too, will be able to create works of art of your own."

Learn to create a bra and belt that fits you to a T and in the colors you want!   After this three class series you will take home a bra and belt as well as a pattern and the know-how to make more costumes.  Sewing experience is helpful.

The classes will be held the first Saturdays of Jan, Feb and March in 2008.  That will be January 5th, February 2nd and March 1st from 9:30 - 11:30am.  We will also have dance classes in the afternoon, from 12:30 - 4:30pm on those days.  Attendees of the costuming workshop will get a discount off of the dance workshops on the same days.

The total for all three 2 hour costume workshops will be $110.  $55 is due to pre-register (by January 3rd) and $55 will be due on the day of the first workshop, January 5th.  Space is limited to 10 attendees so reserve your space early!

You will receive a materials list upon pre-registering and if you have a sewing machine please bring it to class with you.  Having your own machine is not necessary but makes things go a little faster.
Cheryl's belly dance career began in 2001 when she met Dorette, her first teacher, in Newnan, GA. Traveling for for work as an engineer, she was able to learn from many teachers before moving to Atlanta in 2003. Through Dorette's recommendation, Cheryl met and joined the 'Bad Habibis' belly dance troupe. The troupe, directed by Sofia Nur, crafted their own costumes including elaborately beaded bras, belts and stunning head pieces. They dazzled audiences with their custom costuming and choreography.
Today Cheryl performs in shows and restaurants around Atlanta.  She is delighted to share her perspective on a tried-and-true method of costume construction--you can do it!
